Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper by Adrian Ghenie.
Staking out an area between painting, collages and recently even a three-dimensional installation (The Dada Room), Ghenie's work draws from source material ranging from personal narratives, to historical references, to popular culture (e.g. Laurel and Hardy, slapstick), to artistic connotations (e.g. the Dadaists, the renaissance painting). For Ghenie this source material is part of our collective memory. The artist arranges elements from this collective memory into new compositions, creating visual gestures that feel familiar yet eerie to the experiencing subject. According to Ghenie, it is only through the juxtaposition of these images that new symbolic meanings emerge. Moreover, a powerful compositional contrast is established that bypasses the spectator's consciousness. "Nothing is really interesting in itself. It's the psychological tension and the contrast, created by the artistic intelligence, that generates the meaning", the artist states.
Ghenie's work is often characterized by dramatic atmospheric sets and weird tensions, echoing the visual language of film directors such as David Lynch, which is not arbitrary: "my fetish for cinema makes me dream of being a filmmaker with a brush in my hand". Ghenie integrates the element of collage into his work. The added layering and abstract elements augment the artworks' complexity.
Adrian Ghenie was born 1977 in Baia-Mare, Romania; he lives and works in Cluj and London. Recent solo museum exhibitions include at the MNAC Bucharest (2009) and at S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2010).



Tim Van Laere Gallery toont een solo-tentoonstelling met werk op papier van  Adrian Ghenie.
Ghenie breidt zijn repertoire en techniek uit van de schilderkunst naar collages en verder: zo bestudeerde hij onlangs met The Dada Room hoe men een drie-dimensionale installatie als een schilderij kan beschouwen. Zijn artistiek basismateriaal gaat van persoonlijke anekdotes, historische referenties en zelfs populaire cultuur (Laurel en Hardy, slapstick) tot artistieke connotaties (de dadaïsten, de renaissanceschilderkunst).  Volgens Ghenie maakt dit bronmateriaal deel uit van ons collectief geheugen. De kunstenaar neemt elementen uit dit collectieve geheugen en bewerkt ze tot nieuwe composities. Hij creëert visuele gebaren die tegelijkertijd vertrouwd en bevreemdend aanvoelen. Volgens Ghenie is het enkel door de juxtapositie van deze beelden dat nieuwe symbolische betekenissen ontstaan. Bovendien bekomt men zo een krachtig compositorisch contrast, dat zelfs het bewustzijn van de toeschouwer omzeilt. "Niets is echt interessant op zich. Het is de psychologische spanning en het contrast, gecreëerd door de artistieke intelligentie, dat de betekenis opwekt", aldus de kunstenaar.  
Dramatische atmosferische sets en vreemde spanningen kenmerken Ghenie's werk, parallel aan die van regisseurs als David Lynch, wat niet vrijblijvend is: "mijn fetisj voor cinema doet me dromen een filmmaker te zijn met een borstel in mijn hand." Ghenie integreert de collagetechniek in zijn werk, waardoor de toegevoegde lagen en abstrahering de complexiteit van de kunstwerken verhogen.  
Adrian Ghenie werd geboren in 1977 in Baia-Mare (Roemenië); hij woont en werkt in Cluj en Londen. Recente museale solotentoonstellingen vonden plaats in het MNAC Bucharest (2009) en in het S.M.A.K. in Gent (2010).
