Tim Van Laere Gallery presents Between Fish and Stars, Ben Sledsens' sixth solo exhibition at the gallery. In this exhibition, Sledsens presents a new series of paintings and introduces a new series of charcoal drawings on paper. 

 

Our perception ranges from between the fish to the stars, and that is exactly where Ben Sledsens draws his inspiration. He observes and takes everything in from his environment; from deep woods and vast landscapes to a flower arrangement in a living room. There is no hierarchy in his subjects; anything that catches his eye is worthy of painting. However, Sledsens' work does not represent reality but rather an interpretation thereof. He searches for the utopian in the mundane and directs our gaze to the beauty in the things that surround us. In his universe, he abstracts his observations to their essence and searches for the absolute total experience of light and color. He questions our ways of seeing, our perceptions and our assumptions about the reality that surrounds us and the truth behind their meaning. Sledsens' dialogue with his canvases is an open and honest one, in which form, line, composition and color are always the main subjects. 

 

Each step he undertakes in his painting process is well thought out to find the right touch for each part of his composition. To do this, he carefully looks at the work of his predecessors. "Art history is shaped by generations. What is being made now would be impossible without what was before. I go through those generations, look at what inspires me and incorporate that into my work" says the artist. Sledsens has a broad and diverse palette of sources of inspiration and measures himself against his predecessors. His landscapes share compositional similarities with Pieter Breughel the Elder and Henri Rousseau, while his play with light and color evokes the works of James Ensor, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard and even the abstract expressionists like Mark Rothko who explored the extremes of light, color, and form. However, Sledsens never completely distances himself from the figurative; he abstracts in search of essence and beauty within the recognizable forms of his subjects. In doing so, he invites viewers to take in the familiar shapes around them and to become aware of the beauty in their daily impressions. 

 

In this exhibition, Sledsens also introduces his charcoal drawings for the first time alongside his paintings, in which he completely abandons his play with colors and focuses on the essence of composition and the interplay of lines and shapes. He chose charcoal, one of the oldest drawing materials, because of the fluidity and freedom this technique provides him on paper.

Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert Between Fish and Stars, de zesde solotentoonstelling van Ben Sledsens in de galerie. In deze tentoonstelling presenteert Sledsens een nieuwe reeks schilderijen en introduceert hij voor het eerst een reeks houtskooltekeningen op papier. 

 

Onze waarneming reikt van tussen de vissen tot aan de sterren, en dat is ook exact waar Ben Sledsens zijn inspiratie haalt. Hij observeert en neemt alles in zich op vanuit zijn omgeving; van diepe bossen en weidse landschappen tot een bloemstuk in een woonkamer. Er is geen hiërarchie in zijn onderwerpen, alles wat binnen zijn gezichtsveld valt, is waardig om te schilderen. Het werk van Sledsens geeft echter geen representatie van de werkelijkheid, maar een interpretatie daarvan. Hij zoekt naar het utopische in het alledaagse en richt daarmee onze blik op de schoonheid die vervat zit in de dingen die ons omringen. In zijn universum abstraheert hij zijn observaties tot hun essentie en zoekt naar de absolute totaalervaring van licht en kleur. Hij bevraagt onze manier van kijken, onze waarnemingen en onze veronderstellingen over de ons omringende werkelijkheid en de waarheid achter hun betekenis. Het gesprek dat Sledsens voert met zijn doeken is open en eerlijk, waarbij vorm, lijn, compositie en kleur steeds de hoofdthema’s zijn. 

 

Elke stap die hij onderneemt in zijn schilderproces is weldoordacht om steeds de juiste toets te vinden voor elk onderdeel van zijn compositie. Hiervoor kijkt hij zorgvuldig naar het werk van zijn voorgangers. “De kunstgeschiedenis wordt gevormd door generaties. Wat er nu wordt gemaakt, zou onmogelijk zijn zonder wat er voordien was. Ik ga die generaties af, kijk naar wat me inspireert en put daaruit voor mijn eigen werk”, zegt de kunstenaar. Sledsens heeft een breed en vooral uiteenlopend palet van inspiratiebronnen en meet zichzelf aan zijn voorgangers. Zijn landschappen getuigen van compositorische gelijkenissen met Pieter Breugel de Oude en Henri Rousseau, terwijl zijn spel met licht en kleur ons eerder herinnert aan het werk van James Ensor, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard en zelfs de abstracte expressionisten zoals Mark Rothko die tot het uiterste ging in zijn onderzoek naar de ervaring van licht, kleur en vorm. Sledsens neemt echter nooit volledig afstand van het figuratieve, hij abstraheert op zoek naar de essentie en schoonheid binnen de herkenbare vormen van zijn subjecten. Hiermee nodigt hij de toeschouwer uit om stil te staan bij het herkenbare en op zoek te gaan naar de schoonheid in hun eigen waarnemingen. 

 

In deze tentoonstelling introduceert Sledsens ook voor het eerst zijn houtskooltekeningen, waarin hij zijn spel met kleuren volledig achterwege laat en zich focust op de essentie van zijn compositie in het spel van lijnen en vormen. Hierbij koos hij om te werken met houtskool, één van de oudste tekenmaterialen, vanwege de vlotheid en vrijheid die deze techniek hem op papier biedt.
