Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present I Remain Exhausted, the third solo show of Friedrich Kunath with the gallery.

The title of the show I Remain Exhausted is a poetic statement about the western current way of living. We are constantly in motion, going from one place to the next, we have access to an overload of information, and have infinite options on how we can direct our own lives. We believe we have to be aware of everything, that it’s part of our responsibility and we don’t want to miss out on anything, not even the latest nonsense. It’s the ultimate paradox where freedom presents us with endless choices, where we are forced to create our own limitations as time is imminent in every equation.

Friedrich Kunath’s oeuvre is built on this kind of paradox and irony. Fascinated by the things that find their way to each other, even though it doesn’t make sense for them to correlate. You could even state that dichotomies have shaped the artist himself. Kunath grew up in Karl-Marx-Stadt, a district of East Germany that no longer exists, and emigrated to Los Angeles in 2007. This move presented Kunath with a wide variety of source material ranging from the canon of Art History and German philosophy to the idiom of pop culture and the make-believe world of Hollywood and L.A. Unconsciously it left a trace of melancholy, but it also shaped him in a very unique way: he thinks like a philosopher, has the soul of a poet or musician, the work ethic of a composer and the focus and strive of a tennis player. Like a film director, he isn’t afraid to shape his narrative and follow the path of his greatest passion. One of these passions even led to his first encounter with Tim Van Laere, which was enveloped in an unexpected meeting of like-minded souls. This shared love of art and tennis also forms the core of this exhibition. “Tennis gives us a certain freedom in the head to cope with the art world. Without thinking about it, it allows things to just come to you and see clear truths. It’s the magic of intentionlessness. You can’t reproduce this in the studio or the gallery. It’s what I call the psychology of two worlds. To live in the current world you need the other world where you can recharge”, says the artist.

By placing a clear division between the two exhibition rooms, Kunath emphasizes the importance of dualities. In the first space, Kunath sets the stage with his bright landscapes, that feel like nurturing dreamscapes. They are composed of Kunath’s usual ingredients where he deals with such universal themes of human existence such as love, loss, optimism, vulnerability, and melancholy through the use of humor, art historical references, and the application of his usual pop cultural library and grammar. In almost every work, there is a tangible realization that the world is a spectacle of unfulfilled dreams in which one can only escape the rawness of life through the parallel universe of pop culture. While his entire language is at play in this first room, it retracts in the second room. Here Kunath presents a more contained version of his universe, which presents itself like a fever night dream where the overall tone is more inward and reflective.

Friedrich Kunath was born in Chemnitz, Germany (1974). He lives and works in Los Angeles. Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert I Remain Exhausted, de derde solotentoonstelling van Friedrich Kunath in de galerie.

 

De titel van de tentoonstelling I Remain Exhausted is een poëtisch statement over de huidige westerse manier van leven. We zijn constant in beweging, gaan van de ene plek naar de andere, hebben toegang tot een overvloed aan informatie en hebben oneindig veel opties over hoe we ons eigen leven kunnen leiden. We geloven dat we ons van alles bewust moeten zijn, dat het deel uitmaakt van onze verantwoordelijkheid en we willen niets missen, zelfs niet de laatste onzin. Het is de ultieme paradox waar vrijheid ons voorziet van eindeloze keuzes, waardoor we gedwongen worden onze eigen limieten te stellen omdat we steeds geconfronteerd worden met de tijd.

 

Dit spel van paradoxen en ironie vormt de kern van het oeuvre van Friedrich Kunath. Hij heeft een bijzondere fascinatie voor dingen die hun weg naar elkaar vinden, ook al is het niet logisch dat ze met elkaar in verband staan. Je zou zelfs kunnen zeggen dat dichotomieën de kunstenaar zelf hebben gevormd. Kunath groeide op in Karl-Marx-Stadt, een wijk in Oost-Duitsland die niet meer bestaat, en emigreerde in 2007 naar Los Angeles. Deze verhuizing bood Kunath een grote verscheidenheid aan bronmateriaal, variërend van de canon van de kunstgeschiedenis en de Duitse filosofie tot het idioom van de popcultuur en de schijnwereld van Hollywood en L.A. Onbewust liet het een spoor van melancholie achter, maar het vormde Kunath ook op een zeer unieke manier: hij denkt als een filosoof, heeft de ziel van een dichter of musicus, de werkethiek van een componist en de focus en het streven van een tennisspeler. Net als een filmregisseur is hij niet bang om zijn verhaal vorm te geven en het pad van zijn grootste passies te volgen. Eén van deze passies leidde zelfs tot zijn eerste kennismaking met Tim Van Laere, een onverwachte ontmoeting van gelijkgestemde zielen. Hun gedeelde liefde voor kunst en tennis vormt ook de kern van deze tentoonstelling. "Tennis geeft ons een zekere vrijheid in het hoofd om met de kunstwereld om te kunnen gaan. Zonder erover na te denken, komen de dingen gewoon naar je toe en onthullen zich universele waarheden. Het is de magie van de intentieloosheid. Je kunt dit niet reproduceren in de studio of in de galerie. Het is wat ik de psychologie van twee werelden noem. Om in de huidige wereld te kunnen leven, heb je de andere wereld nodig waar je je kunt opladen", zegt de kunstenaar.

 

Door een duidelijke scheiding aan te brengen tussen de twee tentoonstellingsruimtes benadrukt Kunath het belang van dualiteiten. In de eerste ruimte zet Kunath de toon met zijn heldere landschappen, die aanvoelen als koesterende droomlandschappen. Ze zijn samengesteld uit Kunaths gebruikelijke ingrediënten waarin hij universele thema's van het menselijk bestaan behandelt zoals liefde, verlies, optimisme, kwetsbaarheid en melancholie door het gebruik van humor, kunsthistorische referenties en de toepassing van zijn gebruikelijke bibliotheek en grammatica van de popcultuur. In bijna elk werk is er een tastbaar besef dat de wereld een schouwspel is van onvervulde dromen waarin men de rauwheid van het leven alleen maar kan ontvluchten door het parallelle universum van de popcultuur. Terwijl in de eerste ruimte zijn hele vocabulaire aan bod komt, is dit meer ingetogen in de tweede ruimte. Hier presenteert Kunath een meer ingeperkte versie van zijn universum, dat zich voordoet als een koortsachtige droom waarin de algehele toon meer reflectief en naar binnen gericht is.
