Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome presents I am done singing about the past. Rinus Van de Velde's eighth solo exhibition since the beginning of his collaboration with Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2011 and his first solo exhibition in the Roman gallery space.

 

Rinus Van de Velde is a total artist who constantly explores the tension between fiction and reality through the use of different media such as drawings, installations, ceramics and films. His drawings are the core of his artistic practice in which he constructs a multiverse of storylines where he alters his own story to a fictional autobiography. In these stories, he interweaves reality with fiction, which gives him the freedom to appropriate everything that finds its way into his world. He has already created several alter egos that allow him to appropriate different personas and explore worlds that do not (yet) belong to him. Throughout these different worlds, the constant anchor point is the artist himself. Through impersonations, constructed lies, and appropriations, he comes closer to uncovering the truth about his own identity and artistry.

 

At the beginning of his career he was mostly drawn to the technique of charcoal, where the drawings clearly distinguished themselves from reality by presenting a black and white universe for Van de Velde’s narratives. In recent years he expanded his drawing practice by adding color, starting with the colored pencil drawings, to allow more possibilities and layers in his works. For more than ten years, Van de Velde searched for a color technique in drawing with the same expressive power and possibilities as charcoal. He found those qualities in oil pastel, a material that enables him to draw in the same powerful and fluid way as charcoal while offering a wider range of possibilities.

 

I am done singing about the past marks the artist’s first solo show in Italy. In this exhibition he presents a new series of drawings in charcoal, colored pencil and oil pastel. In his drawings, he codifies the world through a collection of images and combines them into the narrative of his fictional autobiography. According to Van de Velde, telling a lie is much more interesting than telling the truth. Through daydreaming he can travel anywhere, have the most interesting encounters or conversations, and be anybody or anything he pleases to be. His works visualises these imaginary journeys where inner truths are masqueraded under the web of lies laid out by the artist. The handwritten texts underneath the drawings offer a glimpse of Van de Velde’s internal monologues. They reveal his fears, aspirations, desires and state of mind.

 Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome presenta I am done singing about the past, l’ottava mostra personale di Rinus Van de Velde dall’inizio della sua collaborazione con Tim Van Laere Gallery nel 2011, nonché la sua prima mostra personale nello spazio romano della galleria.

Rinus Van de Velde è un artista totale che esplora costantemente la tensione tra finzione e realtà attraverso l’uso di diversi media come disegni, installazioni, ceramiche e film. I suoi disegni sono il fulcro della sua pratica artistica nei quali costruisce un multiverso di storie in cui altera la propria storia in un’autobiografia fittizia. In queste narrazioni intreccia la realtà con la finzione, il che gli dà la libertà di impossessarsi di tutto ciò che entra nel suo mondo. Ha già creato diversi alter ego che gli consentono di appropriarsi di personaggi diversi ed esplorare mondi che non gli appartengono (ancora). In tutti questi mondi diversi, il punto di riferimento costante è l’artista stesso. Mediante impersonificazioni, bugie costruite e appropriazioni, si avvicina alla scoperta della verità sulla propria identità e sulla propria arte.

All’inizio della sua carriera era attratto soprattutto dalla tecnica del carboncino, dove i disegni si distinguevano chiaramente dalla realtà presentando un universo in bianco e nero per le narrazioni di Van de Velde. Negli ultimi anni ha ampliato la sua pratica di disegno aggiungendo il colore, a partire dai disegni a matita colorata, per consentire maggiori possibilità e stratificazioni nelle sue opere. Per più di dieci anni, Van de Velde ha cercato una tecnica di disegno a colori che avesse la stessa potenza espressiva e le stesse possibilità del carboncino. Ha trovato queste qualità nel pastello a olio, un materiale che gli permette di disegnare con le stesse modalità di potenza e fluidità del carboncino, offrendo al contempo una più ampia gamma di possibilità.

I am done singing about the past segna la prima personale dell’artista in Italia. In questa mostra presenta una nuova serie di disegni a carboncino, matita colorata e pastello a olio. Nei suoi disegni, l’artista codifica il mondo attraverso una raccolta di immagini e le combina nella narrazione della sua autobiografia fittizia. Secondo Van de Velde, dire una bugia è molto più interessante che dire la verità. Sognando a occhi aperti può viaggiare ovunque, fare gli incontri o le conversazioni più interessanti ed essere chiunque o qualsiasi cosa desideri essere. Le sue opere visualizzano questi viaggi immaginari in cui le verità interiori sono mascherate sotto la rete di bugie disposta dall’artista. I testi scritti a mano sotto i disegni offrono uno sguardo ai monologhi interiori di Van de Velde, rivelando le sue paure, le sue aspirazioni, i suoi desideri e il suo stato d’animo.

Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome presenteert I am done singing about the past. Dit is de achtste solotentoonstelling van Rinus Van de Velde sinds hij en Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2011 voor het eerst de krachten bundelden en zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in de nieuwe galerij in Rome.

 

Rinus Van de Velde is een totaalkunstenaar die voortdurend het spanningsveld tussen verbeelding en realiteit aftast met verschillende media, van tekeningen tot installaties, keramiek en film. In zijn tekeningen, die het hart van zijn oeuvre vormen, creëert hij een multiversum met uiteenlopende verhaallijnen waarin hij zijn werkelijke leven vervormt tot een fictionele autobiografie. Telkens verweeft hij de werkelijkheid met zijn verbeelding, en zo geeft hij zichzelf de vrijheid om zich alles wat in zijn wereld terechtkomt helemaal eigen te maken. Met de alter ego’s die hij in het leven roept, stapt hij in de schoenen van verschillende persona’s en verkent hij werelden die (nog) niet aan hem toebehoren. Al die werelden hebben één ankerpunt met elkaar gemeen: de kunstenaar zelf. Door impersonaties, zorgvuldig opgebouwde leugens en toe-eigening komt hij met elk werk een stapje dichter bij de verborgen waarheid over zijn eigen identiteit en kunstenaarschap.

 

Aan het begin van zijn carrière uitte hij zijn ideeën vooral met houtskool. Zijn tekeningen uit die periode onderscheiden zich duidelijk van de realiteit: ze leiden de kijker binnen in het zwart-witte universum waarin de vroege verhalen van Van de Velde zich afspelen. De voorbije jaren heeft hij zijn tekenstijl uitgebreid met kleur en experimenteerde hij met kleurpotloden om zich vrijer te kunnen uiten en meer lagen in zijn tekeningen te kunnen verwerken. Meer dan tien jaar lang zocht Van de Velde naar een kleurtechniek die zijn werken dezelfde uitdrukkingskracht en veelzijdigheid kon geven als houtskool. Zijn zoektocht leidde hem uiteindelijk naar oliepastel, een materiaal waarmee hij op dezelfde krachtige, vloeiende manier kan tekenen als met houtskool én waarmee hij zich op meer manieren kan uitdrukken.

 

I am done singing about the past is de eerste solotentoonstelling van de kunstenaar in Italië. Hij onthult er een nieuwe reeks tekeningen in houtskool, kleurpotlood en oliepastel. In zijn tekeningen structureert hij de wereld met behulp van een verzameling beelden, die hij combineert tot het verhaal van zijn fictionele autobiografie. Volgens Van de Velde is liegen veel interessanter dan de waarheid vertellen. In zijn dagdromen reist hij overal naartoe, beleeft hij de meest interessante ontmoetingen en gesprekken en is hij wie of wat hij maar wil. Zijn werken geven die dagdromen vorm, waarin de waarheid wordt omsponnen door het web van leugens dat de kunstenaar weeft. De handgeschreven tekst onder de tekeningen is een fragment van de interne monoloog die Van de Velde voert. Elke regel onthult iets over zijn angsten, dromen, verlangens en gemoedstoestand.
