Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to present its second solo exhibition by Tal R: The Forest in My Eyebrow. This exhibition shows a new series of works that resulted from a confrontation between the artist and an opening in the forest, created by trees that had been cut down. The opening, which curiously seemed to form the shape of an eye, compelled the artist to make a series of drawings, which he later reworked in his studio into colored drawings on paper, woodcuts, and large-scale paintings. In addition to these works, Tal also presents a new bronze sculpture in the outdoor patio of the gallery.

“There is a strange coincidence in the Danish language that the word forest ‘skovbryn’ and eyebrow ‘øjenbryn’ are very similar to each other,” Tal explains, referring to the title of the exhibition. “So when I saw this eye-shaped space of cut-down trees in the forest, I was intrigued. I took a chair and sat there daily to draw. While I was drawing, I asked myself: What exactly am I looking for? What is it that I am drawing? What am I doing here? When you have been doing this for years, it is no longer about copying the forest. It is no longer about registration. You are doing something else. Something you might not be aware of yourself. So when I talk about an eyebrow and the edge of the forest, it is actually me wondering: How long do I really see the forest before me, and after which amount of time do I start to invent the forest? I think that is a question many artists can relate to. When you draw something outside from yourself, for how long do you see it? What do you actually see? And when do you start to invent your version of it? When do you start to use the world as a mirror for something else you experience in life?”

 

“This exhibition is about the drawings I made there, moving my chair around in this eye-shaped cut-down forest. I sat down and thought about what I was seeing, and where its meaning lies. Because when you see a tree outside your window you never can communicate all its details. You have to take what I call ‘your artist mathematics’. This is similar to how you would explain a tree over the phone; you have to decide which information is important. That is the first thing you do as an artist: you make a selection.”

 

Working across a diverse range of media including painting, drawing, print, textiles, sculpture, and furniture, Tal R questions our conceptions and presumptions about our surrounding reality. Through his own systematization of the world, with what he calls his ‘artist mathematics’, he tries to understand the physical world he sees before him and the abstract objects he knows by thought alone. This particular quest he began on small pieces of paper in the forest, with black and white drawings. After returning to his studio, Tal transformed these pieces of paper into colored drawings, which is when he found his vocabulary on the subject. Then, he started making woodcuts, trying out new configurations. As soon as things became more clear to him, these woodcuts turned into large-scale paintings, each with their own language and their own necessity for color.

Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert de tweede solotentoonstelling van Tal R: The Forest in My Eyebrow. Deze tentoonstelling toont een nieuwe reeks werken die voortkomen uit een confrontatie tussen de kunstenaar en een opening in het bos, ontstaan door gekapte bomen. De opening, die vreemd genoeg de vorm van een oog aannam, zette de kunstenaar aan tot het maken van een reeks tekeningen, die hij later in zijn atelier omvormde naar gekleurde tekeningen op papier, houtsneden en schilderijen op groot formaat. Naast deze werken presenteert Tal ook een nieuwe bronzen sculptuur in de buitenpatio van de galerie.

"Er is een vreemd toeval in de Deense taal dat het woord bos 'skovbryn' en wenkbrauw 'øjenbryn' erg op elkaar lijken," legt Tal uit, verwijzend naar de titel van de tentoonstelling. "Dus toen ik deze oogvormige ruimte van gekapte bomen in het bos zag, was ik geïntrigeerd. Ik nam een stoel en ging er dagelijks zitten om te tekenen. Terwijl ik tekende, vroeg ik me af: Wat zoek ik precies? Wat teken ik? Wat doe ik hier? Als je dit al jaren doet, gaat het niet meer om het kopiëren van het bos. Het gaat niet meer om de registratie. Je doet iets anders. Iets waarvan je jezelf misschien niet bewust bent. Dus als ik het heb over een wenkbrauw en de rand van het bos, vraag ik me eigenlijk af: Hoe lang zie ik het bos echt voor me, en na hoeveel tijd begin ik het bos heruit te vinden? Ik denk dat dat een vraag is waar veel kunstenaars zich in kunnen vinden. Als je iets buiten jezelf tekent, hoe lang zie je het dan? Wat zie je eigenlijk? En wanneer begin je jouw versie ervan te creëren? Wanneer begin je de wereld te gebruiken als spiegel voor iets anders dat je in het leven ervaart?Deze tentoonstelling gaat over de tekeningen die ik daar heb gemaakt, waarbij ik mijn stoel in dit oogvormige gekapte bos heb verplaatst. Ik ging zitten en dacht na over wat ik zag, en waar de betekenis daarvan ligt. Want als je een boom uit je raam ziet, kun je nooit alle details ervan overbrengen. Je moet wat ik noem je ‘artist’s mathematics' opmaken, jouw eigen systematisering. Dit is vergelijkbaar met hoe je een boom aan de telefoon zou uitleggen; je moet beslissen welke informatie belangrijk is. Dat is het eerste wat je als kunstenaar doet: je maakt een selectie."

 

Tal R werkt in verschillende media, waaronder schilderen, tekenen, print, textiel, beeldhouwen en meubelen, en bevraagt onze opvattingen en veronderstellingen over de ons omringende werkelijkheid. Door zijn eigen systematisering van de wereld, met wat hij zijn ‘artist’s mathematics' noemt, probeert hij de fysieke wereld die hij voor zich ziet en de abstracte objecten die hij alleen door gedachten kent, te begrijpen. Deze bijzondere zoektocht begon hij op kleine stukjes papier in het bos, met zwart-wit tekeningen. Na terugkeer in zijn atelier zette Tal deze om naar gekleurde tekeningen, waarmee hij zijn vocabulaire over dit onderwerp vond. Daarna begon hij houtsneden te maken, waarbij hij telkens nieuwe configuraties uitprobeerde. Zodra de dingen hem duidelijker werden, maakte hij schilderijen op groot formaat, elk met hun eigen taal en hun eigen behoefte aan kleur.
